A veteran journalist speaks truth to power on issues that matter to the nation

In this collection of columns spanning the years 2000-2019, veteran journalist Bill Maxwell tackles important issues faced by Florida and broader American society that remain as relevant as ever. Demonstrating the courage to take on controversy and the signature pithy style that have won him a nationwide readership, Maxwell offers his opinion on a wide variety of questions with a focus on race, agricultural labor, education, and the environment.

Tampa Bay Times

Bill Maxwell writes a Sunday opinion column for the Tampa Bay Times’ Perspective section.  Scrips Howard News Service syndicates the column.  Bill joined the Tampa Bay Times, then know as the St Petersburg Times in 1994.  Prior to that, he wrote a weekly opinion column for the Gainesville Sun.  He was on the Times editorial board for more than 15 years.  He writes on various topics, including migrant labor, social justice, race, public education and travel.  For his insight and candor, readers either love him or hate him.

Parallel Lives

The Florida Humanities Council sponsored a project highlighting the lives of two people growing up in Florida at the end of the Jim Crow era at a time of incredible division in this country. Those two people were Bill Maxwell and Beverly Coyle. Both are writers, both the children of ministers, both growing up in Florida Geographically close to each other but in two separated worlds. The experience of their traveling together and presenting their stories for the Council became the genesis for writing Parallel Lives. The play highlights their stories of growing up in a segregated Florida and the inherent race issues that linger with us today. It is a platform for discussion of where we have been and where we need to go as this country comes to terms with its own history of discrimination.

Finding Yourself

In July 1995, Maxwell wrote a column about rejuvenating ones own spirit at one of Florida’s best kept secret Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL.  Moran, a collaboration became the book: Finding Yourself: a Spiritual Journey through a Florida Garden.  A true gift of love, the royalties of the book are awarded to the ongoing efforts of two not-for-profit foundations: The Bok Tower Foundation and Role Models Foundation, Inc.  The Book is available through most book retailers or directly through the Bok Tower Garden Gift Shop website.
