Bill Maxwell – Top right

Bill Maxwell is a Florida native.  The member of a migrant farm working family, he went to live with his grandparents in Crescent City, Florida, when he was sixteen.  He attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, and went to Vietnam as a U.S. Marine.  He attended Bethune-Cookman College and earned a full fellowship to the University of Chicago for his masters.  Over the next 40 years, he taught English, writing and journalism at 15 different college institutions.  In the mid 1980s, Maxwell began writing for the Gainesville Sun.  In 1994, he joined the St. Petersburg Times as an editorial writer and opinion columnist.

Maxwell focuses on topics such as social injustice, migrant labor, race, environmental abuses, intolerance issues, public education and literacy.  His succinct writing and logic lay clear many complex and controversial issues.  Maxwell has won several awards and was nationally syndicated by Scripps Howard News Service.
